General Primary/Special Election, July 31, 2012, Qualifying Schedule
County: Political Party/Non-Partisan
May 23 & 24, 2012 ~ 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
May 25, 2012 ~ 9:00 am to noon
Municipal: Special Election - Mayor
May 23-May 25, 2012 ~ 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
All qualifying will be held at the Board of Elections & Registration office
at 96 Academy Avenue, Dawsonville, GA 30534. 706-344-3640.
INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE QUALIFYING
For name to appear on the General Election Ballot November 6, 2012:
TIMEFRAME for an independent candidate to qualify:
Qualifying opens at 9:00 am on Monday, July 30 and shall close at 12:00 noon on the following Friday, August 3, 2012.
QUALIFYING FEE:
If a salaried office, three percent (3%) of the total gross salary of the office paid in the preceding calendar year.
SIGNATURES required on a nomination petition for an independent candidate to appear on the general election ballot – five percent (5%) of the total number of registered voters eligible to vote in the last election for filling of the particular office sought.
General Election – 2008 – 13,156 active registered voters = 658 signatures
CIRCULATION of the nomination petition:
No nomination petition shall be circulated prior to 180 days before the last day on which such petition may be filed, and no signature shall be counted unless it was signed within 180 days of the last day for filing the same.
Petition must be signed February 8, 2012 – August 6, 2012 noon (Filing deadline)

Directions to Early Voting Site
The Board of Elections and Voter Registration became a combined board in 1998. It is comprised of five members; two from the Republican Party and two from the Democratic Party. The fifth position is held by the Chief Registrar who acts as Chairperson of the board. Each member serves four year terms. The board meets at 9:30 AM on the third Monday of each month and all meetings are open to the public.
The Board of Elections and Registration is committed to nurture and protect democracy for the citizens of Dawson County through the voter registration and electoral process and to provide impartial elections in accordance with state and federal laws in an efficient, effective and timely manner.
